The Leaven & The Heart

Preacher:
Service Type:

This week, Tabitha continues leading us deeper into Jesus’ words in Mark 8, as we begin to uncover the hidden influences that shape our thinking, our responses—and most importantly—our hearts. With clarity and compassion, she challenges us to take a close, honest look at the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod, not just as historical references, but as active cultural undercurrents that still affect us today.

Jesus warned, “Beware the leaven…” not because of its surface appearance, but because of its quiet, swelling influence. One puffs us up in self-righteousness and shame; the other seduces with power, appetite, and fear. Both distract us from the Kingdom way and harden our hearts toward others.

But there’s good news: compassion is the antidote.

We are called to return to a soft heart—one willing to be reshaped by humility, empathy, and truth. Because in the Kingdom, transformation begins not with striving, but with surrender. Not in accusation, but in compassion.

This week’s key themes:

  • Recognizing the leaven of religion and power in our own hearts
  • The danger of empathy-less religion
  • What it means to truly see people as Jesus does
  • The link between compassion, humility, and transformation

Scripture Homework:

  • Mark 7–9, Matthew 15–17, Luke 12–14
  • Focus on: The heart posture behind the actions. What’s driving the disciples, the Pharisees, and even us?

A reflection question to carry with you:
Where has your heart become hardened—and what would it look like to let Jesus into that space?

Thanks for listening. If this message stirred something in you, share it, journal it, and take time this week to slow down, reflect, and allow compassion to have its full work in you. Send us an email at: [email protected]
