What is a Tenebrae service?  “Tenebrae” is the Latin word meaning “darkness.” On Good Friday we share the story of Jesus’ journey to the cross from John’s gospel. After each segment of the story is read, a candle is extinguished. After the final reading, which confirms that Jesus had died on the cross, the last of the candles is extinguished and a loud sound is made to convey the sense of total loss, and the effect of the death of Jesus on the universe. The service ends in near darkness.

We then will leave in silence to ponder the impact of Christ’s death and await the celebration of the coming Resurrection.

The event is finished.
